Rydal Daffodil Festival

The Station Garden

Each year in September, when the grass is still brown from frost, the little village of Rydal (population 80) near Lithgow in the Blue Mountains, holds its daffodil festival.

There is a variety of gardens, big and small, and most are open to the public. For a small fee you can spend the day wandering from garden to garden and chatting to the owners. The locals serve morning and afternoon tea, including home made scones, and of course the pub is open for lunch!

I think even I could wait for a bus if the bus stop looked like this

The train to Sydney passes through Rydal station once a day. However, you have to ring up and book if you want it to stop for you.

It's so wonderful to see what a small community can achieve when everyone works together.

  1. What a great community - they've made Rydal a wonderful destination to visit.
There's nothing nicer than sheets of daffodils or bluebells, heralding the start of Spring.
Do the community look after the Rydal station too?
We're just starting our 'garden visits' here and I've booked to go on the Coatesville garden day with friends near the end of November. I'm sure I'll do a post about it, hopefully I won't forget my camera!!

  2. Hi Shane,
Yes I think the community looks after everything and the proceeds of the festival go to buying things they need. You can book to stay in the station master's cottage which has been set up like a little B & B.
Please do a post about the gardens you visit, I love to see how other people do things. And don't forget your camera!
